Basically Britt’s Room

The day has come and I can no longer watch Brittany fall into a clustered trap, I know she will have to claw her way out. Her room has become a human trap and for some reason nothing seems to peak her interest. In the past I know Brittany would never allow me to touch a single item in her room but over the years I have learned special methods that have helped her trust me with the treasures scattered all over her floor.

Our morning started like any other day, Brittany and I sat down for our morning cup of coffee. I always take this opportunity to talk about how she is feeling then we follow up with how to spend the day. Today was an easy one for me, I knew her room needed tackling like an NFL Quarterback. She trust me now and allows me to change up her room as long as I go through her before tossing items in the trash.

Brittany had way to many crafts scattered in every room of the apartment. I asked her to grab a box and throw every paper, glue, scissors, tape and miscellaneous crafts in it. Once all the crafts are out of her room, I start picking up garbage and dishes. At this point you can start to see the desk peak out from all her junk and treasures.

Now it’s time to pick a corner and start organizing everything I know she will be keeping. She is on full alert and making sure her items are handled with care. I so badly want to laugh but a silent chuckle will do. Not sure that’s how I would care for my treasures but but it’s basically Britt wanting control. If she breaks it or damages her property it’s fine but I am to respect her stuff. Why argue when progress is being made. I noticed in the past if I start rummaging through everything like it’s trash, she takes full control and nothing gets done. Once I complete the task of clearing everything out of the room I wipe down all her furniture.

Now it’s time for the real challenge of putting her items back in a more organized fashion. Most of her items fell from the wall of fame as I call it. She’s a lot like a young teenager and still has all her old school posters, albums and memorabilia’s hanging up on the walls. The arts and crafts were separated from the pile next. It’s a mountain of beads, Gems, paint brushes, paints and so much more. This was going to be a tough one and a tedious long project but one that’s been driving me crazy.

There had to be a better way to store her crafts. The blue trunk also had piles of crafts and everything was open or thrown back in the trunk. What a huge mess. Ok, Deep breath, thoughts to yourself and “getter done”. It was time to do some switching around and find a better way to store her crafts.

Finally after two long days I was able to organize and clean the entire room. It’s nothing special but at least the clutter is gone and hopefully she can focus more. Everything is like a special station of activities ready for her to enjoy. The front closet is now filled with crafts. I brought the records and record player in the living room. The guitar is in full view and I am praying she starts playing again. Origami paper is in a special box close to the computer, papers and markers are ready on her desk for drawing, pen and pads are in her drawers, waiting for some good story telling or inspiring poems.

Basically Brittany is a very happy camper and she thanked me with a fresh cup of coffee. The entire time Brittany was in charge and I was compliant. Why bring a knife to a gun fight when you can bring flowers to a freshly cleaned room.
